Drywall Texture
There's more to it than you may think
Not all painters also specialize in drywall texturing. And it's actually easier to do drywall and finish-texturing upon new, fresh sheetrock compared to pre-textured, painted, or wall-papered surfaced. This is because the 'rock' is porous, allowing somewhere for small air bubbles in the material to go. Re-texturing walls is quite possible, with enough time, labor, and material.
Things to Note:
- in general drywall texturing is a messy process, so I implement all precautions to keep your house clean - like mitigate dust by frequently vacuuming after sanding, plastic off a particular room or area being worked on, lay down drop cloths to completely protect floors, use masking and tape where necessary.
- 24 hours of drying time is needed in between coats to ensure the joint compound (the white, drywall mud) is not just dry but cured and ready for a second coat.
- To reach a high level 4 smooth wall (think San Francisco Victorian as one example) takes at least three and a half days. The process and price does not include priming, which is part of the painting process.
Services Include:
1. re-texturing / re-surfacing from orange-peel or knockdown. These are your basic, common textures. Often efficient from the construction side, they are not the most aesthetically pleasing or high end look.
2. A high level 4 smoothness, approaching level 5. This is the most labor and skill intensive finish texture. An example of level 5 would be an art gallery, which is perfectly smooth, including the absolute straightness of the wall (and not how houses are constructed) it can take harsh overhead lighting. That is not necessary or appropriate for a home, which is why I make the distinction - I wouldn't want to make your home look like a museum.
3. "Imperfect smooth" which can have various looks or styles containing more or less texture. One popular texture, and which immediately elevates a room, is my "Cat Eye Smooth." What does this mean? Predominantly smooth where the vast majority of smooth (a high level 4 - smooth to the touch and visually) with natural recessed shapes of texture - often in the shape of an Egyptian cat eye.
4. "imperfect smooth" with more random texture, comprising closer to forty or fifty percent of wall space compared to the purely smooth.
